Chapter Thirteen: The cities, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur

24 november 2016 - Hong Kong Island, China

After 4 flights in 2 days, Hong Kong. I'm heading there for a job interview in hk.

It is raining season in south east Asia, but it butters me for the first time. In Hong Kong it's raining during the day. I booked a room in a guesthouse near the business district of hk. While i was searching for the guesthouse, i was getting waylaid by people who offered me rooms and drugs. I wasn't expected that, especially not in Hong Kong. I right away experienced how little living space there is.
It took me forever to find my guesthouse, 1 flat contained 117 guesthouses. When i saw my room, i was surprised. My room was 3 by 4 meters and it was one of the most expensive rooms i booked during my trip. Bathroom was 1 by 1,5, toilet and shower combined. Wow, welcome to hk. 117 guesthouses in 1 flat became understandable.

The next couple of days i was exploring the city, would this be a place where i could live? Hk is big, but unlike London, everything goes sky high. Perhaps it was the weather, perhaps the fact that hk is one big shopping mall, perhaps the extremely annoying people who wants to sell you everything. Especially when you look like a tourist. I'm not exaggerating when people offered me 30 times per day drugs!! At some point i was getting angry, later on I just ignored them. Is this a place that could feel like a home to me and live here for a couple of years?

When i had my interview, the guy didn't show up, there i was sitting in 5 star hotel, paying 10 euros for a little bottle of water. I sent that guy an email, but no response. That night I had my flight to kl, so this was the only day that I could meet them.
This was my experience with St. James Place, what a lousy people work there. Of course afterwards, or just before I left, I received many mails and apologies plus the gesture that they will compensate the costs.

Still, I'm so glad that I came here. It all fitted in the picture that I don't want to live in hk. I would not ask myself in 15 years time, What If..
The thing I would definitely miss is space and nature. Although many lovely places are reachable by plane, but still I don't see myself living in a shared shoebox.

Back to kl, the little things I missed during my travels are the simple things. Watch a movie, go to the gym etc. I was at a perfect time in kl, raining season, but in Malaysia it was not so severe as in other parts. Initially I booked a flight to the Philippines, but the weather was awful. That's the nice thing that I can deviate from my journey whenever I like. So a couple of days in kl, than most likely Thailand, that part that was not hit by monsoons and tropical storms.

In kl chill time, unfortunately I hurt my back during training. But if it needed to happen somewhere, than kl. Normally I hate lying on bed for 3 days, but now it was a welcome gift. Watching movies and Netflix...loved it and after 3 days this old body was repaired. Kl is a much better city than hk, more open, less dense, more nature, less crowded, but that's a personal opinion.

On my way to another country...chilling on a beach for a while and no traveling!
